Danube Awareness Day

The Danube is not only an international waterway, but also a cultural region, natural habitat and energy source, amongst others. The Action Programme for the Danube until 2022 by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) represents an integrative strategy for a balanced development of the multifaceted Danube.

Under the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Austrian waterways operator via donau (Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft mbH) will organise an expert meeting in the Austria Center Vienna. During the event this holistic approach – which should serve as a role model for other ministries of transport or waterways operators in Europe – will be presented.

The programme includes several presentations, including a “Good Practice Report on environmentally sustainable waterway management practices”, and a panel discussion on the question: “How to balance good navigation status and good ecological status in practice?”.
